Internet Payroll Tool Developer Seeks Patent
The Electronic Accountant - New York (May 3, 2000) -- Internet-based payroll may be taking off, but Rey Monzon, who started Virtual Payroll five years ago, is going to try to reap extra benefit from the concept.
Monzon has dubbed Virtual Payroll a pioneer in providing Web-based payroll processing and says that many other Web-based payroll processors have copied his business model, reports the May issue of Accounting Technology magazine. As a result, he is trying to patent browser-based Internet payroll, which means competitors would have to pay him royalties.
A decision could be reached by the end of the summer, according to Monzon. "I'm anticipating that it should shake up the industry," he said.
Internet-based processes, including Amazon.com's. single-click purchasing technique, have stirred controversy as to whether they qualify for patents or are obvious processes that can't be protected by patents.
